Dr. Hitt served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, healthcare in the nation. Dr. Hitt has served on the Board of Directors o numerous AIDS organizations including: AIDS Project Los Angeles, AIDS Healthcare Foundation and Gay and Lesbian Center of Los Angeles.
His past political activities have included serving on bards of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund (Co-Chair for 4 years) and A.N.G.L.E. He also headed the President Clinton's Advisory Council on AIDS.
Dr. Hitt has been accused by state regulators of sexually molesting two male patients at his office.
Dr. Hitt admitted he touched one patient inappropriately in August 2000 and "crossed a boundary" with another patient one month earlier, according to a formal accusation filed by the Medical Board of California. Both alleged incidences occurred at the Pacific Oaks Medical Group in Beverly Hills.
The accusation seek to have Hitt's medical license revoked or suspended. Hitt made his admissions after a complaint was filed in the August 2000 case.
Hitt, the first openly gay person to head a presidential advisory body, told the Los Angeles Times,that he did "things I regret" while battling colon cancer.
"In July of 1999, my life fell apart. I was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer. My odds of recovery were very slim," Hitt said. While undergoing three surgeries in 45 days as well as chemotherapy, he said, "my judgment was impaired."
Hitt has not seen any patients since the accusation was made. He resigned from practicing in late 2000.
