Holder swam for Lewis and Clark College in Oregon. In 2000, he wrote the following to the NCAA:
"Collegiate and professional athletics remain unsafe and unwelcoming for many gay and lesbian athletes: the locker rooms and playing fields of team sports are littered with homophobic rhetoric and a pervasive "don't ask don't tell" atmosphere. As a result, gay and lesbian student-athletes are encouraged to cloister their true selves, many hiding in shame and self-contempt from their coaches and teammates."
