Magdalen Hsu-Li
(January 1, 1970 - living) U.S.A.
Magdalen Hsu-Li
Singer, songwriter, painter and poet

Hsu-Li was born, as Rochelle Li, in the rural South to one of the only Asian families in Martinsville, Virginia. She studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. Magdalen is one of the first openly out bisexual Chinese-American singer-songwriters in the US, and a pioneer among Asian-American women in music.

In 1992 she migrated to Seattle, WA and became immersed in the legendary Seattle music scene of the early 90's. She began her study of jazz and classical music at Cornish College of the Arts, and was the recipient of the 1995 Cornish Music Scholarship.

Magdalen founded Chickpop Records in 1997 with the release of her debut ep Muscle and Bone. That same year she founded "Femme Vitale", The Seattle Women's Music and Arts Coalition, a women's arts advocacy organization that won a Special Projects Grant from the King County Arts Commission.

Magdalen was nominated for a GLAMA Award for her song for Monkeygirl the single from her critically acclaimed 1998 release Evolution. Most recently, Magdalen's has become popular on the grassroots, college, & folk music circuits, and has been a familiar face on the college, acoustic, women's and GLBT Pride circuits.

Magdalen has broken new ground as the forerunner of a new wave of Asian musical artists. She is a consummate performer, visual artist, and free spirit with a world vision that cannot be categorized: writing universal, personal, and political songs that stretch the boundaries of our consciousness.
