Born in Paris of a French mother and a Dutch father as Georges Charles Marie Huysmans, he studied Law at the University of Paris and spent 30 years as a civil servant. His best-known work is A rebours (Against Nature, 1884), a novel of self-absorbed aestheticism which symbolized the "decadent" movement.
