Born into a lower middle-class/working-class as George Jorgensen, sie grew up attending public schools, and was ultimately drafted into military during WWII. Sie underwent sex reassignment surgery (SRS) in 1951 having hir first operation in Denmark.
While in fact Jorgensen was not the first person to undergo SRS, the publicity surrounding hir surgery and life changes did bring a new understanding of the difference between homosexuality and transsexualism to the US public.
As Christine, sie caused quite a sensation, starring in plays and making albums.
