Karin was brought up in a middle-class household in Central Valley, California. Aged sixteen she fell in love with another woman with whom she continues to live in Oakland. In 1995 the two women had a child.
Karin gained a BA at the California State University at Sacramento. Inspired by the film Desert Hearts, based on the novel by Jane Rule, Karin began to write popular lesbian romances, publishing with Naiad Press, one of the foremost lesbian presses in the USA.
Her first novel was In Every Port. This was followed by Touchwood (1991), Car Pool (1993), Painted Moon (1994), Paperback Romance (1994), Wild Things (1996), Embrace in Motion (1997), The Dawning (1999), and Frosting on the Cake (2001).
