The son of a wealthy businessman, he was educated in journalism In Denmark and at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism (1963-64). He worked as a television news reporter for the Danmarks Radio and was a freelance reviewer of French, English and American literature.
From 1971 Kampmann lived from his literary production. He was co-editor of the magazine Seksualpolitik published by the Gay Liberation Front in Copenhagen. From his debut in 1962 with the collection of short stories, Blandt venner (Among Friends), until his sudden death, Kampmann published 19 volumes, mainly novels.
In 1962 he had married the pianist Therese Herman Koppel; the marriage was dissolved in 1972. Kampmann came out publicly late in 1975. He was murdered by his lover, the author Jens Michael Schau.
