Charles Criswell King

Psychic

One of the most famous - and colorful - pop psychics of the 1950s and 1960s, Charles Criswell King was known to the public only as "Criswell". He got his start as a radio newscaster in New York City, where he began delivering not only the news but also on-air predictions about future events. He soon advanced to television, including The Jack Paar Show...

He later became a close friend of the now-famous cross-dressing film director Ed Wood and appeared in several of Wood's movies, including the notorious Plan 9 From Outer Space. In the late 1960s, Criswell published several slender books of predictions - always with a flamboyant emphasis on the lurid and the improbable - including Criswell Predicts: From Now to the Year 2000!

He lived in Los Angeles, and although married, he was known to frequent various hustler hangouts - including the legendary Gold Cup, on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Los Palmas - in search of young male companionship. He died in 1982, at the age of 75, leaving behind a colorful roster of deranged predictions that one commentator referred to as "Nostradamus on bad acid".
