Kevin Kumashiro

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Kevin K. Kumashiro is the newest Senior Professional Associate to be hired in NEA's Human and Civil Rights Division. Kevin taught in elementary and secondary schools in the United States and abroad, and after earning his Ph.D. in the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Education, worked on the faculty in the departments of education at Swarthmore College, PA, and Bates College, ME.

Kevin K. Kumashiro is an associate professor of education and the coordinator of Asian American Studies at the University of Illinois- Chicago, and the founding director of the Center for Anti-Oppressive Education. He is the author of several books on education, including Troubling Education, which received the 2003 Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award.

He has served as a trainer and consultant for schools, universities, organizations, and departments of education across the United States on issues of racial/sexual diversity, oppression, teacher preparation, and activism, and most recently, he founded and directed the Center for Anti-Oppressive Education. His newest book, Against Common Sense: Teaching and Learning toward Social Justice, appeared in 2004.
