Billy was the 1984 U.S. junior men's champion. He died of AIDS-related complications, at the age of 33. He was survived for four years by his life partner Robert Wagenhoffer.
One of their joint projects in their six years together was a company, Ice Pirates, which marketed a skating-themed calendar to benefit AIDS organizations. Lawe spent the early 1990s traveling the world with Wagenhoffer.
