Born in Texas, she attended university, and then spent twenty years traveling and working in Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, and Canada. Shi has written many radio plays, short stories, and poems, mostly with a lesbian content and featuring lesbian characters within a heterosexually defined world.
Her works include the novel Good Friends, Just (1983), Pearl (1985), Blackbird, Bye, Bye (1989), and a collection of short stories, Mayakowsky, My Love (1984).
