He was born Robert O'Doole. When Robert's father leaves his wife and son in Petunia, an East Texas backwater, for a pregnant girl friend, Jessica is 45 and Robert is 16. Left penniless, mother and son were forced to move from their lavish home into a dreary apartment. His mother took Robert to Houston and embarked in a large-scale makeover so that she can hook a rich husband. For Jessica, having a 16-year-old son is an obstacle to this project; having a flamboyantly gay one even more of one.

In a Houston theater company production of "West Side Story", the 17-year-old Robert meets a 25-year-old choreographer named Michael Leleux. When Robert falls instantly, madly in love with Michael, he feels obliged to come out to everyone about his sexual orientation. His mom told him that she has known he was gay since the day he was born.

It's just a matter of time until Robert and Michael Leleux stood together before a judge and in a ceremony at a Texas courthouse changed his name to Robert Leleux.

Robert Leleux is a young poet and novelist who has published numerous magazine pieces and teaches creative writing in New York City Schools. The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy (2008) is his first book.

In August 2008 Robert and his lover Michel went to California to get married. Robert says, "...it's odd, really, how much getting legally married means to us - on a really private, validating level - to have the world give its nod to our life."
