Deputy chair of the Liberal Democrat party's federal executive and a parliamentary candidate in 2001, said in 2002 he wanted to be London's first openly gay mayor.

Donnachadh McCarthy was born in Ireland, and studied anatomy, physiology and biochemistry at the National University of Ireland in Cork. After University, he pursued a ballet career, performing with the Dublin City Ballet, Vienna Theatre Ballet and the Royal Opera Ballet. He moved to London in 1986.

A chance trip to the Amazon rainforest changed his life. After visiting the Yanomani Indians, he returned to Britain convinced that urgent action ws needed to halt the destruction of the planet's environment. Since then he has campaigned tirelessly for environmental, liberal and social causes.

He is a frequent contributor to Liberal Democrat News, Liberator, and Challenge magazines. He is the former manager of Islington Chamber of Commerce and currently works for a national children's charity.

He keeps fit by cycling, yoga and the occasional professional ballet class. He is also a dance critic for the ballet magazine Dance Europe. He is openly gay and lives in Camberwell, in South East London. Now the committed Liberal Democrat lives a green lifestyle in his solar powered cottage.
