Born in Peterborough, Ontario, Derek is one of North America's most daring young writers.
Derek is the author of two short story collection set in his hometown of Peterborough: Dark Rides and Wish Book: A Collection of Stories (1999). Notably, he is also the co-author of Wild Mouse, which was nominated for the 1999 Toronto Book Award.
His short stories and non-fiction have appeared in newspapers, magazines and anthologies across Canada and the United States, and Stargaze, a film based on his short story by the same name, has appeared at many Canadian and international film festivals.
Derek's novel, The Haunted Hillbilly (2003), brilliantly combines the comedic and the gothic to image a part of gay history that has been deliberately erased in the country-and-western world.
He also wrote Halloween Suite and Western Suit. Derek works as a bookseller at Book City on Bloor Street near Bathurst in Toronto.
