Martha was born in San Francisco, California and have lived in Amsterdam, the Netherlands since March 2000. She became a dual national (Dutch-American citizenship) because U.S.A. country doesn't recognize her marriage and won't grant residency to her wife Lin Pugh.

Martha works as a professional writer. In 2002, she realized that no matter how good her life was - having a home, family, marriage, and career that she loves - she was still angry that her country refuses to treat her as a first-class citizen. Martha realized she was an exile. Once she saw it, Martha realized she had a choice: to become bitter about her lack of choice, or to be inspired by the other exiles around her, and work to make a difference. That is why Martha started the Love Exiles Foundation.

In October 2004, Martha traveled 5000 miles from Amsterdam to San Francisco to join the Marriage Equality Express - a caravan of some forty activists, supporters and friends. They crossed the heartland of America on their way to a rally in Washington D.C. - stopping along the way to talk about same-sex marriage and immigration equality issues.
