A native of South Central Los Angeles, he began a vocation in social services at the age of 16.

He was selected as one of the top 100 most influential African American leaders in Los Angeles, and makes appearances on Black Entertainment Television (BET), CBS, NBC and ABC News.

Founder of the Black Men's Xchange (BMX), an Africentric national communications clearinghouse and support system for the empowerment of Black men of diverse sexual expression.

Cleo Manago, Chief Executive Officer and founder of the popular African, American, Advocacy, Support-Services & Survival Institute (AmASSI) Centers in Los Angeles and Oakland, in California, is also known for popularizing the terms for Black-men-who-Love-men and same-gender-loving people of African descent.

AmASSI is a full service non-profit agency providing emotional support, counseling and health educational services to couples, individuals and families diverse in sexuality and expression. Services emphasize the health and wellness of Black people and people of color.

Other than organize these two groups, Manago has written for The Black Scholar, Essence, and Alternatives magazines. He is currently a doctoral student at the California Institute for Integral Studies in San Francisco.
