Born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, she was educated at Chatham College, Pittsburg, where she gained a BA in 1976, and at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, where she completed an MA in 1979.
Between 1988 and 1990 she was editor of the magazine Conditions. She has also been co-chair of the Board of Directors of the New York City Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center. In 1990 she won the Lambda Literary Award for lesbian fiction. In the same year the Puffin Foundation awarded her a grant for teaching lesbian writing.
