Eduardo Mendicutti
(1948 - living) Spain
Writer
Mendicutti belongs to the extremely small group of Spanish intellectuals who do not esitate to identify themselves ag gay. He is never embarrased to acknowledge his homosexuality when appearing in the media, and his fiction takes homosexual culture, identities and lifestyles as source of ispiration. Mendicutti's popularity shows that homosexuality does not damage a writer's reputation and that there is a wide audience for gay fiction.
A typical representative of Spanish attitudes, Mendicutti does not seem to embrace the Anglo-American model that defends the need for a "respectable" gay identity, but perhaps his work should be considered as a serious contribution to the debates surrounding the politics of homosexuality, a contribution that certainly can bring fresh air and a "queer" sense of humor to some Mediterranean manifestations of sexual dissidence.
