John Milton
(December 9, 1608 - November 8, 1674) U.K.
Author and poet
Born in London, the son of a scrivener, he was educated at Cambridge. As a youth, at university, Milton was known as the 'Lady' of Christ's College. Milton had a loving relationship with Charles Diodati. This is recorded in the letters they wrote to each other.
His early poems include the pastoral style L'allegro , and Il pensieroso (1632), the masque Camus (1633), and the elegy for a dead friend Lycidas (1937).
There are homosexual allusions in various Milton works including his elegy for Diodati, Epitaphium Damonis (1638).
From 1649 he was Latin Secretary to the Council of State. The masterpieces of his old age in retirement (he was almost blind), are his epic poem Paradise Lost (1667), and Paradise Regained (1677). and the classic drama Samson Agonistes (1677).
