Hélène de Monferrand

Novelist
Born in Paris to a family of impoverished minor nobles, de Monferrand spent her childhood as a privileged European in pre-independence Algeria. Back in paris, she attended the prestigious Lycée Jules Ferry, followed by university studies at Nanterre and the Sorbonne. Her academic qualifications include a first degree in classics and a postgraduate diploma in accountancy.
Formerly head of financial services at a Parisian hospital, she now works in the French press. She also works, unpaid, as an editor and as treasurer of Lesbia Magazine, a buoyant French lesbian magazine of 18 years' standing.
She received the Goncourt prize for a first novel (not to be mistaken with the Prix Goncourt) in 1990 for Les amies d'Héloïse. She has lived with her present female partner since 1997.
