Lance Mulcahy was born in Sydney, Australia.

Largely associated with the Phillip Street Theatre of Sydney, in association with writer/lyricists John McKellar and Gerry Donovan and director/ producer William Orr. As with McKellar and Donovan, Mulcahy's early theatre experience involved university revues while he was a student at Sydney University. The trio's productions between 1953 and 1955 include Merry Go Round and Maid in Egypt (both 1953), and Top of the Bill (1954).

Among his musicals, Keystone was inspired by silent film and provided an inspiration for Jerry Herman's contemporaneous and more successful Mack & Mabel . His musical Shakespeare's Cabaret , one of three works based on the Bard, was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical in 1981.

He was a Broadway and Musical Theatre composer and a Composer-in-Residence with Center Stage Theater of Baltimore. His archives are with Desmond Heeley, his companion, and they are pledged to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
