John "Jack" Norris Nesbit|
(1927 ? - June 23, 2000) - Canada
Jim and Jack, in 1948 in Toronto, first met, fell in love, and decided to make a lifelong commitment to one another.
Jack Nesbit and his partner of over 52 years, Jim Egan, made history when they took their challenge to the opposite-sex definition of "spouse" in the Old Age Security Act all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. Although their claim was denied in a narrow 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously in the 1995 Egan judgment that "sexual orientation" is a ground of discrimination protected by the equality guarantees of the Charter of Rights.
Jim's passion, humour, dedication and deep commitment to his partner Jack were captured in David Adkin's moving video: Jim loves Jack, the James Egan Story.
Jim Egan died March 9, 2000; Jack Nesbit less than four months later.
