While working at XY Magazine in San Francisco, Benjie met Mike Glatze. The two would end up being boyfriends for 10 years, until 2007, when Mike became an "ex-gay" and disawowed all his past and his love for Benjie...
They founded Young Gay America in March, 2001, a project that saw them and another friend drive across Canada and the United States, interviewing over 1,500 queer teens about the experience of coming out and coping in high school. At a workshop at the recent Outgames human rights conference in Montreal, he shattered the myth that queer youth are simply victims of circumstance and oppression. Instead, he encouraged the audience to think of gay teens as "resilient... full of compassion, empathy and insight. Capable of strategic thinking and possessing new and flexible concepts of identity."
Before starting Young Gay America, Benjie was Associate Publisher of the youth magazine XY and author of the Lambda Literary Award-Nominated book The XY Survival Guide: Everything You Need to Know About Being Young & Gay. Benjie has volunteered for the Stop AIDS Project and the Gay & Lesbian National Hotline and has been a board member and designer for the Gay & Lesbian Community Center in San Francisco.
