Mr Olexander is one of the most conservative MPs in State Parliament and is also openly homosexual. In 2002, he called for a ministerial adviser to be sacked for advocating drug use to university students. He has also smashed a ceramic "piggy bank" during a parliamentary debate, entered into a public slanging match with a Labor MP, and called for the National Gallery of Victoria to remove artwork lampooning Prime Minister John Howard's relationship with US President George Bush.

In July 2004, gay Victorian Liberal MP Andrew Olexander has resigned after crashing his car while driving under the influence of alcohol early Sunday morning. Olexander was heading home after a night of drinking when he crashed into four parked cars. He was the first Victorian parliamentarian to come out as a gay man.

As the Victorian opposition's Arts, Youth and Consumer Affairs spokesman Olexander had spoken several times on the need to get tough on drug and alcohol abuse in the community. The Herald Sun reported he had a blood alcohol reading of 0.15 (legal limit being 0.05) following the accident.
