(1940 - 1979) U.S.A.
Photographer and art gallery owner, Opel streaked across the stage during the 46th Annual Academy Awards show on April 2, 1974, during David Niven's announcement of the award for best picture. The quick-witted Niven recovered by making a joke:
"The only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping... and showing his shortcomings."
Opel was seen by approximately one billion TV viewers worldwide; afterwards, he used his notoriety to promote gay artists; he was shot to death in 1979 during an apparent robbery attempt at his erotic gay art gallery/apartment, although the police say he was a drug dealer and suspect he may have been killed in a drug-deal gone wrong.
