Dr. Raymond Parker, was a researcher at the Rockefeller Institute, the Connaught Labs and the University of Toronto, and author of a classic 1938 book about tissue culture.
In 1945, he discovered a defined chemical nutrient medium in which cells can grow and replicate, a finding which helped Jonas Salk to develop the polio vaccine.
In 1955, he discovered a way to grow poliovirus in monkey kidney tissue culture, paving the way for the development and mass production of a new polio vaccine.
