Sir Peter Pears|

Born in Farnham, he studied at the Royal College of Music. He had a relationship with the composer Benjamin Britten, that lasted 40 years. Pears was the co-founder of the English Opera Group in 1946.
A co-founder with Britten of the Aldeburgh Festival, he was closely associated with the composer's work and played the title role in Peter Grimes: he was also often the first performer of works by Tippett and Berkley.
Pears was knighted in 1978. He died in Aldeburgh.
