Born at Sidney, Ohio, sometimes credited as Dick Pefferle, he won six Oscar® prizes. In television from 1958, Pefferle was set decorator for episodes of "Northwest Passage", "The Lawless Years" and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E."
He received the Academy Award for Best Art Direction for the following films:

- Madame Bovary (1949)
- Annie Get Your Gun (1950)
- Les Girls (1957)
- Period of Adjustment (1961)
- The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962)
