Kimberly moved around frequently while growing up; she lived in Pennsylvania, Florida, Puerto Rico and Chicago. She studied English and Japanese literature at the University of Chicago, Illinois; and film at Columbia University, New York. Kimberly lived in Japan for two years and worked as a photographe, as an English teacher, and as a model to fund her undergraduate education.
Kimberly has written magazine articles about film. In 1994 she shot the movie The Last Good Breath, and in 1999 the compelling and absorbing film Boys don't cry, about Teena Brandon's life and murder that happened in 1994.
