Descendant of the Macedonian Ptolemy I Soter, one of the generals of Alexander the Great, who, at the death of Alexander, became King of Egypt. Ptolemy VI became king at the death of his father, under the regency of his mother. At her deat, Antiochus IV invaded Egypt and put Ptolemy VI in prison. Freed by his youger brother Ptolemy VIII, he resumed the throne. Ptolemy VI died in the war against Alexander Bala; in spite of this his troops won the war.
