Mirtha, a lesbian feminist, anthropologist, poet, author, and Associate Professor at The Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies Program at New Jersey City University, was born in Havana, Cuba.

She immigrated to the United States in 1962. She received her PhD in Anthropology in 1987 from Ohio State University, Columbus Ohio. Among her most recent publications is Telling to Live: Latina Feminist Testimonios (2001), co-edited with the Latina Feminist Group.

Telling to Live... was awarded the 2002 Myers Outstanding Book Award presented by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights in North America. Her works include I Paid Very Hard For My Immigrant Ignorance (1981).
