Clinton was raised on a farm near the small town of Wolsey, South Dakota. He went to California to pursue a dream of acting and modeling. He worked in Santa Barbara as real estate manager and was an aspiring actor. He landed bit parts in a number of films, including as a dancer in the 1991 comedy Doc Hollywood.

Clinton died when Martin Thomas Hartmann poured gasoline on him and lit him on fire because he was gay. Hartmann allegedly attacked Risetter in his home on Micheltorena Street downtown while he was sleeping.

Two days after the fire, Martin Thomas Hartmann, a 38-year-old suspected serial arsonist whom Risetter befriended about six months ago, turned himself in to police. Hartmann told investigators he entered Risetter's apartment while he was taking a nap, then doused the bed with gasoline and set it on fire. Risetter woke up and ran to the back porch, where firefighters found him burned to death.

Hartmann had apparently been friendly with Risetter but told police he only recently discovered Risetter was gay. "Marty Hartmann said he has ill feelings toward gay people and decided to put [Risetter] out of his misery because [he] was suffering from depression," says police sergeant Mike McGrew.

The District Attorney's office charged Hartmann with murder, arson and a hate crime, and he is being held in Santa Barbara County Jail. Hartmann is eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
