Ross owns a Tucson interior decoration firm in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is the HIV+ gay grandson of former right-wing Republican Senator Barry Goldwater. After retiring from the Senate after five decades in politics, Goldwater surprised many by coming out strongly in favour of gay rights, championing homosexuals serving in the military and working locally to stop businesses in Phoenix from hiring on the basis of sexual orientation.
