Sarah Scott
(21 September 1723 - 3 November 1795) U.K.
Novelist and writer
Born as Sarah Robinson into an established Yorkshire family, in 1748 she met Lady Barbara Montagu, the daughter of the first Earl of Halifax. The two women began a relationship that lasted until Lady Montagu's death in 1765.
In 1750, Scott's first novel, The History of Cornelia, appeared. In 1751 Sarah married George Lewis Scott, separating from him the following year. Writing became a way of sustaining herself financially. After separating from her husband, Scott and Lady Barbara moved to Bath to set up a female community at Batheaston and to teach poor children. This formed the basis of Scott's most famous novel, Millennium Hall (1762).
