Mary-Woo Sims

Activist

separator

Born in Hong-Kong, Mary-Woo first went to Vancouver as an exchange student in 1970. Struck by the beauty of the land, its diversity and atmosphere of acceptance and social justice, she decided to make Canada her home and became a Canadian citizen in 1978.

Most of her life has been spent in public service in Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Toronto. She returned to Vancouver in 1997.

Along with two other partners, she currently operates Ardent Consulting Canada, which specializes in positive organizational change that supports a culture and environment which respects and embraces human rights and diversity.

Mary-Woo is not a life-long politician. She has dedicated her life to working side by side with communities and families and to fostering social justice and equality.

Her on-the-ground experience, from driving the Hastings bus for British Columbia Transit to serving as the Chief Commissioner for the British Columbia Human Rights Commission, makes her the ideal person to represent the values of working people in Ottawa.

As an advocate and as a voice for progressive change, Mary-Woo's track record speaks for itself:

She was named Chief Commissioner of the British Columbia Human Rights Commission, for the period 1997-2002. In July 2001, the newly elected British Columbia Liberal government fired Mary-Woo Sims several months before the expiry of her term as Chief Commissioner of the B.C. Human Rights Commission.

Mary-Woo is co-chair of the Campaign for Equal Families;she was awarded the Chinese Canadian National Council's Chinese Canadian Pioneer Award.
