Born in South Orange, New Jersey, as Kevin Spacey Fowler, Spacey being his middle name. Spacey starred as an out-of-work suburban father and husband in the Oscar-winning American Beauty. Described as "Ordinary People" played for laughs, it earned Spacey a much-deserved Oscar for best actor. His talents have also been put to good use in such films as L.A. Confidential, Glengarry Glen Ross, and The Usual Suspects, for which he won an Oscar for best actor in a supporting role in 1995.

Kevin SpaceyIn 1997 Esquire magazine insinuated that Kevin Spacey was gay. The article came out on the heels of the release of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, in which Spacey played a gay murder suspect. But in a recent issue of Playboy, Spacey denied all the rumors. He never cared if people thought he was gay, he says, and he believes the Esquire article had homophobic underpinnings.

The Esquire article from September 1997 did not outright declare the bachelor Spacey gay. It merely said bicoastal "sophisticates," as well as his mother, had heard a rumor that he was.

"It wasn't that I cared that they inferred I was gay, because I believe that people in this country are more advanced than certain members of the media, who try to use their medium as a weapon. But I felt betrayed,"
Spacey says.
