Michael Stipe
(January 4, 1960 - living) U.S.A.
Pop musician, singer, songwriter, and film maker
Born in the Atlanta suburb of Decatur, Georgia, he started in the music business by playing in cover bands in St. Louis. In 1978 he began studying at the University of Georgia in Athens. It was here where he regularly went to the Wuxtry record store where he met Peter Buck who worked there as a clerk.
Michael Stipe and Peter Buck met Bill Berry and Mike Mills and they formed the band "Twisted Kites" in April 1980 to play at a friend's party. By the summer of that year the band was re-named R.E.M. He has also been interested in photography and film. He became the owner of the film production company C-I00.
There was much speculation about Michael Stipe's sexuality for some time. There was also concern about his health as he often looked very ill. He eventually complained about the need to be categorised in terms of sexuality; he came out in 2001, stating:
"...a lot of people thought that I was 100 percent homosexual. That's not really the case. Nor am I 100 percent heterosexual. Nor do I adhere to or appreciate the label bisexual. I think it's kind of cheap. It's confining. It's putting a male geometric set of rules onto something that I think as female and very fluid..."
