Robert Tanella was a 1972 graduate of Fordham University. He was a costumer for film, stage, and TV, including 10 seasons of Cheers .

His numerous TV credits as a costumer, costume supervisor or costume master included "The Tortellis," "Brothers," "The Two of Us," "The Associates," "CPO Sharkey," "Fun Factory," "The Carol Burnett Show" and "Maggie" and pilots for "Leonard," "You and Me," "Rag Business," "Gung Ho!" and "Highcliffe Manor."

Tanella also worked on TV specials for Bette Midler, Mac Davis, Bing Crosby and Diana Ross, among others.

Feature credits were Warner Bros.' "Personal Best" and "First Family."

Among his Broadway credits were "Mack & Mabel," "The Ritz," "Lorelei," "Jesus Christ, Superstar," and "Bette Midler's Clams on the Half Shell."

He died, 42 years old, at his home in Los Angeles, of complications from AIDS. His companion of eight years was Mark Gerstner.
