Anthony Turney

Episcopalian deacon

Anthony began his ministry in public service through work in arts administration at the San Francisco Opera, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and the National Endowment for the Arts. At the Endowment he built bridges between federal, state, and local governments and their efforts to support our nation's artistic treasures - both human and organizational.

In mid-1991, he quit his work to care for his partner who was dying from AIDS-related complications. In 1992, presenting the quilt of his partner at the display of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, he asked, "What would you have me do now, Lord?" Within months, he was director and within three years, would bring more than 42,000 panels of the Quilt to Washington for the display.

Ordained to the permanent deaconate in 1996, Turney has found the way to build bridges between the faith he holds and the community he serves. A deacon in the Episcopal Church, Anthony Turney is the former executive director of the NAMES Project Foundation, custodian of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. He is also chaplain of the AIDS chapel at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, California.
