(1964 - living) Canada
Maurice was born in the suburbs of Toronto. The youngest of 4 artistically-talented siblings, he was encouraged to draw from an early age. Inspired by his sister Ingrid, he attended the Ontario College of Art from 1982 to 1986 where he studied communication and design.
Maurice started illustrating and showing his work during his third year at College. Since then, he has worked for almost every major editorial publication in North America and Europe, as well as for design, book publishing and corporate clients.
He is best known for his colorful illustration work, which always bears the mark of his sensible light touch. His equally elegant and heart-warming comics appear mostly in the pages of Drawn & Quarterly magazine, which has introduced many fine Canadian comix artists. Drawn & Quarterly also published an excellent anthology of Vellekoop's works called Vellevision.
Maurice lives on Toronto Island with his cat Fred.
You can see his work in our "lounge" where we have the complete Maurice Vellekoop's ABC Book: A Homoerotic Primer.
