Born in northern New Zealand, she holds a PhD in political economy. In 1975 she became the younghest member of, and the only woman in the New Zealand Parliament. She was re-elected in 1978 and 1981, but left parliamentary politics in 1984 after campaigning against her own government on behalf of a nuclear-free New Zealand.
Waring has been "out" as a lesbian since the 1970s and speaks publicly on gay and lesbian issues. She currently campaigns in support of same-sex marriages being made legal in new Zealand and worldwide.
