Ian was born on May 8th 1976 in Llwynpia, Rhondda, Wales.
He worked as a Redcoat for the Butlins Holiday Camps. Ian became a member of the pop group Steps and was known as "H" which he said stood for "hyperactive". The group enjoyed great success and was particularly popular with pre-teen girls.
The group split in 2001 and he formed a duo with another former member of the group - Claire Richards - performing as H & Claire. They released a few singles but success eluded them. Ian decided to take up acting and enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music and took a musical theatre course. His progress was filmed and broadcast as a television series "H-side Story". After graduating he went to New York to continue studying acting.
Back in London he landed the role of Joseph in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat". In January 2007 one of the worst kept secrets in show business became front page news - Ian was gay! His ten year relationship with the manager of Steps - Tim Byrne - had ended in 2006 - he had kept quiet about his sexuality for fear of upsetting the fans of the group.
