Watney's involvement in gay and lesbian politics began in the early 1970s through his participation in a number of community organisations and regular contributions to the British gay press.
Simon lives in London. He teaches "a little" at the Royal College of Art but has not been a full time academic since 1987. His most recent book is Imagine Hope: AIDS & Gay Identity, Routledge, London & NYC, 2000. He actually is Senior Lecturer, History and Theory of Photography, at the School of Communication, University of Central London.
