Carol Whitehead, divorced from her husband in 1971. The father helped in support for a year after the divorce, but then decided to withdraw support and to attack his former wife for her sexual orientation. Carol was one of the first lesbians to win a child custody case in the U.S. She was awarded the custody of her two children by the Maine Superior Court in 1976.
