She was born and grew up in Long Beach, California, and did not learn to read until she was seven years old. After college, in the late 1960s she travelled, teaching herself Spanish, german, and Norwegian. In the 1970s she worked for a time as an investigative journalist. In 1974 she moved permanently to Seattle. In the1980s, Wilson first produced crime fiction based on a lesbian detective, Pam Nielsen.
