Elisabeth Wolff Bekker
(July 24, 1738 - November 5, 1804) Holland

Betje Wolff



"Betje" Wolff, was born at Flessinga (also spelled Vlissingen) as Elisabeth Bekker, the daughter of a prosperous family., Betje ran away with a naval officer at the age of 17, only to return home in a few days, deeply hurt by the experience.

In 1759 she married to reverend Adriaan Wolff. After he died in 1777 she went to live together with her lover Aagje Deken. She was a writer and collaborator with Aagje on the first Dutch novel, De historie van mejuffrouw Sara Burgerhart (The History of Miss Sara Burgerhart). Betje died inThe Hague, aged 66.
