Gary (his chinese name is Wu Chun-sheng) was arrested and imprisoned in 1995, for being gay. Now living in exile in the West, he has publicized the plight of gays and lesbians in the People's Republic of China. Gary is the author of Black Souls Under a Red Sun, which documents queer life in China and has been banned by the Chinese authorities.

Gary has founded the International Chinese Comrades Organization (ICCO) to establish an international network for Chinese gay and lesbian activists inside and outside China. ICCO is based in San Francisco at the International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission.
