Yamakawa Tomiko was having an affair with the tanka teacher, and publisher of Myoojoo (Morning Star), Yosano Hiroshi.
The man, although married, was also having an affair, at the same time, with his young student, and poetess, Yosano Akiko (1878 - 1942). Thus the two women met, and became became best friends and lovers.
Tomiko died of tuberculosis a few years after the above photograph was taken.
