Georgi Konstantinovich Zhukov

Marshal of the Soviet Union
Chief of staff from 1941, he defended Moscow (1941), counter-attacked and won at Stalingrad (1943), and led the offensive from the Ukraine (1944) which ended in the fall of Berlin. He headed the Allied delegation that received the German surrender, and subsequently commanded the Russian occupation forces inside Germany. He succeeded Bulganin as minister of defence (1955-57).
