first they came

This beautiful and meanigful poem is derived from a speech of Reverend Niemoller. Here is the exact text of Reverend Martin Niemoller's address to the U.S. Congress, and which appears in the Congressional Record, October 14, 1968, page 31636:

"When Hitler attacked the Jews
I was not a Jew, therefore I was not concerned.
And when Hitler attacked the Catholics,
I was not a Catholic, and therefore, I was not concerned.
And when Hitler attacked the unions and the industrialists,
I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned.
Then Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church --
and there was nobody left to be concerned."

Several versions of this speech were made in poems, slightly different from each other. Hera are some of the most known versions:

In Germany they came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up
because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me,
and by that time
no one was left to speak up.

First they came for the Jews,
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the Communists,
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.

Then they came for the Homosexuals,
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Homosexual.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists,
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for me,
and there was no one left
to speak for me.

They came for the Communists,
and I didn't object -
For I wasn't a Communist;

They came for the Socialists,
and I didn't object -
For I wasn't a Socialist;

They came for the labor leaders,
and I didn't object -
For I wasn't a labor leader;

They came for the Jews,
and I didn't object -
For I wasn't a Jew;

Then they came for me -
And there was no one left
to object.
